The graffiti game is perceived as anonymous vandals that are out to write their names on the streets be praised by the homies who see it on their commute to work and of course put on a pedestal amongst their crew members. It’s a mixture of art and a sport, where the prize is spelling out your name without getting caught. The fact that it’s illegal makes graffiti writers have a mentality to constantly be on the run and have a hard “street attitude” often associated with males. And if a female were to have a “street” mentality they are judged and seen in a negative light. Which brings our attention to L.A. based female writer Jerk. Well known in the L.A. graffiti scene she has been published in books that put her on the same level as her international counterparts. She is seen throughout the streets of Los Angeles bombing in areas that one cannot perceived a human (male or female) achieve to put their art on (think billboards, freeway walls, and street signs that just seem to dangerous to get to.) The fact that her femininity is disguised makes her gender neutral and letting other graffiti writers judge her on her skills, rather than her sex. On as to why choosing the name in a recent interview by a blog dedicated to graffiti women she said, “I am JERK. I chose this name for a couple of reason. I liked playing with these letters the most and I did not to give away my gender. I think for the most part since we were all kids on the play ground we’ve all heard “you run like a girl or you this or that like a girl” since then I’ve quickly notice how much society embeds the notion that females are inferior. So because graffiti allows you to exist without a profile picture I choose JERK. The more I learned about the graffiti scene, the more I realized that to keep to myself would allow my graffiti to be judged on the same level as the rest without the “it’s good for a girl” assessment.” - @DivineDiosa
