Don’t be That American with the Mediocre Knowledge of the English Language

With technology having taken over the lands of the earth, growing the difficulty of mankind separating from cell phones and electronic devices, fundamental reading is surely being buried. I mean, when’s the last time you picked up a book, or read anything with words other than, your telephone screen scrolling north and south of, social media sites? Hmm... We, as a people, need to start encouraging the power and stimulation we can give our minds, through reading. Reading and utilizing your time to strengthen your mind will not only expand your vocabulary, but, also, help you to speak with purpose and integrity. Due to texting, and ‘only 160 count messages’ and character restrictions, most of all the basic, English words are being shortened, and some even removed from daily dialogue. This is causing an unfortunate rift between healthy human interaction and the need for learning, and using new words, to demonstrate proper and effective communication skills. Challenging our imagination supports the finding of individual creativity; which, in turn, leads to the creation of quality productions, bodies of work, and inventions. How else do you think people live outside the box? Surely, it isn’t by choosing against growing their minds, every day.

Okay so, I assume, you’ve grown up in the United States for decades now, right? How outstanding, basic or poor, is your knowledge of the English language? Test yourself. How many of the following words do you use, or even know the meanings of?

Antipathy Affinity

Antidote Anomaly

Pabulum Nirvana

Lassitude Lucid

Insouciance Eloquence

If you know 6 or more, you are part of the hope I have for the intelligence of the English language never perishing. If not, TRY SOMETHING NEW, find 2 other people who, also, don’t know these words, and learn them together! Use them in sentences ALL day long and for the rest of the week. Every day, teach yourself a new word.

Last week, as I was chilling in a Mexican restaurant in Old Town Pasadena, I attracted 2 groups of people that genuinely conversed with me about real, relevant topics, which greatly impact our nation. These days, everyone’s attention is buried in electronics; humans hardly engage with each other through intelligent conversation anymore, everything is slang, gossip, wickedness, and more gossip. This experience was almost unreal for twenty-fifth-teen. I met a married couple and their son Charlie, who is now my friend; the four of us chatted about everything from Donald Trump, politics, and election to sports. Because of them, I now watch soccer and tune-in to Ohio State Football games. Ha! The second, was an interracial, Asian/Caucasian, couple. The guy had a heck of a sense of humor; he embraced everything about his genius, and physical appearance, palm tree tall and skinny. His woman however was a bit different, quiet and observant; although, she laughed at every one of her honey’s jokes. I laughed my stomach sore this night; we spoke about sports and how people DON’T talk to one another anymore. How ironic, eh? Needless to say, I had a great time meeting new people and was able to make an impact on 6 people’s lives, by holding general conversation, through my personality and spirit.

So, today I encourage you to stop and meet someone. Use your spirit of discernment, and make a friend. Ya never know!

“Shut up, -Shabetti Bashazz.
