Your Hair is an Accessory, Too!

Your hair is an accessory too! An Awesome trend in hair care

It’s the time of year when the moon comes out to greet us earlier and the wind whips around us like a cool blanket. The crisp air carries the scent of colorful falling leaves. This is fall, the beginning of the protective hair styling season. While protective styles definitely have a place year round, fall and winter are definitely two seasons where a natural gal can most benefit from protective styles. Due to the weather conditions battling against our hair, we need to shield and protect our hair from the inevitable damage this can do. (And for all you natural girls in warmer climates protective styling can just be a great way to give your hair a break from constant manipulation!)

Of all of the options we have, one of the trending, exciting and incredible versatile styles is crochet braids. Though they have been around for quite some time, they are growing in popularity and in options. Crochet braids, offer the look of curly or straight hair, without having to use glue or cause damage to the natural hair. The hair is braided back, sideways, or in circular patterns, depending on the desired style, and then synthetic hair is crocheted into the natural hair. This allows for styling ease as well as easy access to the natural hair for upkeep, which aids in hair maintenance.

The cost of crochet braids varies as well. On the east coast, I have seen these styles run from around $100 to $200, but they can last from one and a half to three months, depending on hair type, regimen, and stylist recommendations. For those who want to cut the cost considerably less, YouTube has a few women who can guide you through the process of various crochet braid styles. Beautycanbraid is one account that does a wonderful job of explaining the process of crochet braids. She also braids using the vixen method (a method where you leave your own hair out for the most versatile styling).

Borderhammer, another great account, post videos about the various styles you can do with the crochet braids as well as crochet wigs and installs of crochet kinky twists among other things. Lastly, Rarediamondzz has one of the most natural crochet braid installs ever. Her tutorial is extremely direct and simple to follow. These are just a few of my favorites but of course there are other great accounts to follow along if you are attempting to do it yourself and cut down on cost. Just remember if you are going to invest in protective styling (that utilizes synthetic or human hair) that you still care for the hair underneath! Our hair is our crown and glory and if we are going to go protect it with a beautiful style; we need to make sure that when it comes off our natural hair has remained beautiful as well!
